On the face of it, developing a taste for saffron could be an expensive habit – a teaspoonful is likely to cost you about £10 – but the good news is you don’t need much to get results. It’s pricey because saffron strands are the stigma of a type of crocus, and 500,000 flowers might be needed to produce just 1kg.
